How To Make Natural Ice Cream

  • Freeze bananas. If you don’t already have frozen bananas on hand, cut and freeze bananas completely before making ice cream.
  • Add frozen bananas, cocoa, almond butter, and half of the coconut milk to a blender.
  • Add as much of the remaining coconut milk as needed to make all of your ingredients blend until very smooth. You may need extra milk if your blender is not very strong. This should yield a soft-serve consistency result, and can be served this way if preferred.
  • Line a bread pan or other freezer-safe pan with parchment.
  • Pour natural ice cream “nice cream” into pan and stick in the freezer for 2 hours before serving. This will give it more of the traditional, firm ice cream consistency.
  • Garnish or add toppings as desired.
  • Note: if you freeze banana ice cream overnight, it will become much harder. You will need to pull it out for 20 minutes or so to soften before serving. You can store nice cream in the freezer in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

Our recipe certainly isnt low-calorie, but its made with ingredients youre very familiar with.

    How To Make Chocolate Nice Cream

    It really doesnt get much more simple than this easy vegan dessert. The only thought that has to be put into it at all is freezing ripe bananas ahead of time.

    Many grocery stores actually bag up the overripe or ugly bananas that have brown spots on them and sell them for really cheap. Thats when I like to grab them up.

    Bring them home, peel each one, and place them in a gallon-size freezer bag, and store them in the freezer. Some people slice theirs into circles, but Ive never had a need for that and freezing them whole after peeling works great.

    Oftentimes, when I want a really quick snack in the evening, Ill just eat a frozen banana because they dont freeze solid hard like ice but have more of a popsicle consistency.

    When youre ready to make nice cream, simply place two frozen bananas in your blender or food processor. They can be broken up into chunks before tossing them in, but I tend to leave them whole. If your blender isnt pretty powerful, breaking them into chunks will help them process.

    My favorite blender is the Vitamix 5200 because it is so powerful, it can blend anything. I actually own two of them because I use them in the Food for Life classes I teach for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

    Plain banana nice cream can be made by simply adding a splash of plant milk and blending, and its really good. Other varieties can be made by adding in other frozen fruits like strawberries, mango, raspberries, and more.

    Bananas are naturally creamy and sweet. The only preparation this recipe needs is cutting your bananas in small pieces and freezing them a few hours before. Normally they will need at least 4 hours in the freezer before being ready to blend!

    Once your fruit is frozen, blending them will be quite easy. I recommend making larger quantities because that makes it easier to blend. Try to use at least 4 or 5 bananas, because it will fill up your jug and make it easier to tamper it down as you blend it.

    Many ice creams contain milk, yoghurt or cream to create this typical smooth and thick ice cream taste. Because banana is naturally creamy, you wont need to add any dairy to this recipe. This means you can easily make a super creamy vegan ice cream. Of course this banana chocolate cream is gluten free as well, which seems logical but actually isnt many industrial ice creams unfortunately contain gluten.

    If your blender is not very strong, or you are not patient enough to wait a little until the banana gets a bit softer , or you just want even more creaminess, try mixing in some soy milk or yoghurt, or even better, coconut milk or yoghurt.     Chocolate Banana Ice Cream is a summer staple in our house and we absolutely love this homemade frozen treat. I make a lot of ice cream recipes and this is one of my favourites!

    I love ice cream. More than just about anything in the whole wide world. I also love chocolate. As much as ice cream. Bananas are another love of mine. They rank pretty close to chocolate, and ice cream. So I combined them all into one fabulous recipe. Then I tossed in some rum extract for a little extra oomph.

    I was perusing one of my favourite websites, David Lebovitz, and saw he had a great Chocolate and Banana Ice Cream that didn’t require an ice cream maker. David uses alcohol to keep ice cream from freezing too hard. Which is a genius idea. However I have a health condition that means alcohol is off limits to me. I can have extracts though so I used rum extract in this to get a similar flavour.

    I am so impressed with how this turned out. It’s the best ice cream I’ve had in a long time, and that’s huge coming from a gal who eats ice cream on a regular basis.

    Chocolate Banana Ice Cream

    This chocolate banana ice cream is not really an ice cream, its a faux ice cream. The consistency is very similar to ice cream but it doesnt contain dairy or sugar. When ripe frozen bananas and cocoa powder are combined together in a blender you get a creamy, guilt-free, scrumptious frozen treat. Its also gluten-free and vegan. Seriously 2 ingredients and a blender, thats all you need!

    Chocolate banana ice cream is really quick to make especially if your bananas are already frozen. I usually keep a container full of bananas in the freezer so I can make an individual serving whenever I want.

    For a sweeter ice cream, use bananas that are very ripe. If you use unripe bananas, you may need to add honey or sugar.

    When you put the chopped bananas in the freezer, line the plate or tray with parchment paper. I didnt and they got stuck on the plate.

    If you want to use chocolate instead of cocoa powder dont freeze the bananas. I triedI melted the chocolate and when I poured it on the blended bananas it became solid again. My advice, blend the bananas and melted chocolate then put the mixture in the freezer to set.

    How To Make Banana Ice Cream

    Once your bananas are ripe , peel them and cut into pieces. Freeze in a ziploc bag or container.

    You can do this step days, weeks, or even months in advance so theres no need to wait when you are ready to make banana ice cream.

    To make the nice cream, start by tossing the frozen pieces of about three bananas into a food processor or blender. No need to be exact with measuring, and feel free to double or triple the recipe for a larger serving or to feed a family.

    If using a regular blender instead of a high speed one like a Vitamix, or if your frozen bananas are rock hard, add a few tablespoons milk of choice or another liquid.

    Blend until the mixture resembles a thick and smooth soft serve texture.

    Either transfer to a bowl and enjoy right away, or spread the banana soft serve into a container and freeze for thirty minutes or so to get a firmer ice cream texture.

    Usually, I will eat the banana ice cream in a bowl, straight out of the blender, because this option involves no waiting. If you do want the firmer texture, I recommend scooping it out with an ice cream scoop after chilling, for authentic presentation.

    Different Flavors To Try

    While I opted to make this chocolate nice cream , there are truly SO many different ways you can make it, with some of my favorites listed below.

    Peanut Butter. Swap the almond butter for peanut butter and add more for a richer flavor. You can leave in the cocoa powder for a chocolate peanut butter flavor, or just swirl in the peanut butter before you freeze or serve.

    Mint Chocolate Chip. A classic! Leave out the cocoa powder and add 1/2-1 tsp of mint extract and about 1 cup of chocolate chips. This is one of my personal favorite flavors.

    Blackberry. Blackberry, strawberry, cherry you can add any other fruit you can think of! Still keep the bananas as the base since this is what makes it creamy, but you can add 1 cup worth of frozen berries for a different flavor.

    Vanilla Caramel. Im a vanilla girl forever and always, and vanilla caramel nice cream is one of my favorites of all time. Start with a base of bananas and vanilla extract and swirl in my vegan caramel before serving or freezing.

    Cookie Dough. Make a small batch of my classic vegan chocolate chip cookies and add small bites of dough to the ice cream. SO GOOD.
