Best For People Who Hate Mint Chip: Ben & Jerry’s Mint Chocolate Cookie
Average Rating: 2.75/5
We did have a few mint chocolate chip haters among the testers . But their feedback was particularly useful for this superlative: best mint chip ice cream for people who hate mint chip.
Ben & Jerry’s Mint Chocolate Cookie ice cream has a barely-there mint flavor and is loaded with generously-sized chocolate sandwich cookie chunks. We found it to be pretty reminiscent of classic cookies and cream ice cream. This is a safe choice if you’re on the fence about mint flavor, but still want that light, refreshing taste.

The Cinnabon flavor that you know and love is strong in this new bakery-inspired treat.
The base is creamy and has a sweet vanilla and cinnamon flavor to it. It is packed with little pieces of cinnamon dough that give the ice cream some texture. There is also a generous cinnamon swirl flowing throughout.

Another cool thing about Breyers Cinnabon is that it can be the star of the show in some creative recipes. Breyers and Cinnabon also co-created some recipes to celebrate the launch of the new ice cream.

Turkey Hill Choco Mint Chip
Average Rating: 1.94/5
Turkey Hill’s real, premium ice cream has a large fan base in the Northeast, but unfortunately their Choco Mint Chip ice cream left more to be desired. Our testers were pretty split on this one, running the gamut from “Just tastes cheap,” to “Love the texture of the little chips melt in your mouth!” This is definitely a mint chip ice cream for one who prefers to have a lot of little chocolate crumbles, rather than chocolate chips or chunks.

Whats With The 99% And What About The Lower Calories And Fat
We called Breyers and asked why the ice cream was considered 99% lactose-free and not 100%. We know from speaking to other companies that make lactose-free milks that they consider their products to be 100% lactose-free. So what is it in this ice cream that the lactase enzyme apparently doesnt completely affect?
Brand representatives stated that,
Whey protein isolate contains less than 1 percent lactose. Which is why we dont make the claim on that product of being 100% lactose free. If you need a 100 % lactose free product, the products you are looking for have DAIRY FREE on the container.
Please note that it took 2 calls and four emails for them to answer the question and it isnt even well addressed. After this many queries we gave up, which frankly was disappointing. Breyers is owned by Unilver and we expected more from their customer service.
As far as the ½ the fat and & frac13 fewer calories than regular ice cream this is due to the formulation, which has more milk, less cream and gums that provide body so the formula doesnt rely on cream, which is high in fat.
So Delicious Mint Coconut Milk Frozen Dessert
Average Rating: 1.63/5
We wanted to love this dairy-free option, but sadly the texture was far too dry and icy for us. If you’re going to go with a coconut milk option, we’d suggest sticking with the NadaMoo!, which has a much more minty flavor .

Breyers Ice Cream Gluten Free List
Breyers currently offers 66 ice cream flavors, but only 29 of them are gluten free. I dont mean only as in why arent there more? Im happy to see that these popular ice cream brands are offering more options for people who need a gluten-free diet.
This updated list indicates which Breyers ice cream is gluten free:
- Black Raspberry Chocolate
- No Sugar Added Butter Pecan
- No Sugar Added Caramel Swirl
- No Sugar Added Vanilla
- No Sugar Added Vanilla Chocolate Strawberry
- Non-Dairy Vanilla Peanut Butter
- Vanilla Chocolate Strawberry
- Vanilla Fudge Twirl
Breyers used to have CarbSmart Peanut Butter and Coconut Fudge on their list, but those were removed. Were not sure if Breyers stopped making those items or if those two products now have gluten-containing ingredients in them.

Best Splurge: Mcconnell’s Mint Chip
Average Rating: 3.56/5
Okay, I know not everyone is willing to shell out a whopping $12 for a pint of ice cream. But, if you’re looking to treat yourself to top-shelf, high-quality ice cream, McConnell’s makes a dang good mint chip ice cream. This California-based creamery uses grass-fed milk and cream, along with real cane sugar and melted, bittersweet chocolate. And for those with dietary restrictions, it’s gluten-free and nut-free.
“Very nice,” raves one tester. “Minty, but not overpowering. Good chip amount!” I would caution you that the mint flavor here is the real deal and if you don’t like mint, you’re better off skipping this one: “If you love mint, this is it. I personally like a more mild flavor,” says one reviewer.

Are Breyers Ice Cream Cups Gluten Free
A common question people ask is are Breyers ice cream cups gluten free? This is a tricky one.
Breyers offers Reeses Snack Cups, Natural Vanilla Snack Cups and Chocolate Snack Cups. While they have no gluten-containing ingredients , these ice cream snack cups are not categorized as gluten free.
This is slightly puzzling, especially when you look at the ingredients for the Natural Vanilla Snack Cups:
Milk, Cream, Sugar, Water, Vegetable Gum , Natural Flavor.
Is the gluten hiding behind the natural flavor? Thats doubtful, because Breyers states , Any ingredient that may contain gluten are always listed on the label.
My guess is that the Breyers snack cups are manufactured in a different facility from their quarts, and those cup may come in contact with gluten. Its only a guess, though!
So, are Breyers ice cream cups gluten free? Were going to say no to this one just to be safe! All the other Breyers quarts have a cute little green Gluten Free stamp on the product, and the snack cups do not. They also are not sorted as part of the gluten-free ice options on their website. None of this is a mistake. Keep yourself safe and stay away from the Breyers ice cream cups if you have to avoid gluten.

If you prefer your mint chip ice cream light on the mint and heavy on the chips, Jeni’s has got your back. One taster describes the Green Mint Chip ice cream as, “Light, airy, and refreshing if mint were a cloud!”
And we know looks aren’t everything, but Jeni’s Green Mint Chip ice cream has a vibrant green color that’s 100 percent natural: “The vibrant green hue is all-natural, too, made with a leaf called spirulina, and juice from whole fruits and vegetables,” says Jeni’s on their website.
At $12 a pint, this is definitely a special occasion ice cream, and though the McConnell’s outperformed this one, Jeni’s ice cream is far more widely available.

Best Budget: Blue Bell Mint Chocolate Chip
Average Rating: 3.17/5
Blue Bell is an iconic, recognizable brand, especially here in the South where no kid’s birthday party was complete without those single-serve, Blue Bell ice cream cups. But this was my first time trying their mint chocolate chip ice cream, and it didn’t disappoint if you can get past the alarmingly greenish-blue color. It earned high marks across the board, including for flavor, creaminess, and value .
“Classic,” says one tester. “The mint flavor you know and love.”
On the list of cons for the Blue Bell was the scarcity of the chocolate chips. And it should be noted the Blue Bell was one of the first to melt into a soupy mess when sitting out at room temperature for about 45 minutes.

Talenti Mediterranean Mint Gelato
Average Rating: 2.36/5
We had high hopes for the Talenti, being that it was the only gelato we tested. But the creamy, melt-in-your-mouth gelato texture was not enough to make up for the unappealing mint flavor that was described as, “leafy,” “toothpaste,” and “a little soapy,” by our testers.

Our Take On Breyers Lactose Free Ice Cream
If you want chocolate or vanilla ice cream and want to try a lactose-free version, why not give these a try. As always, proceed with caution when adding a new foodstuff.
The texture was creamy, and the flavors were good, if not exceptional, but we did find the texture to be a bit too soft. This ice cream melts very quickly. Not a good choice for a cone.
Where to Buy: Currently available at select stores that carry the Breyers brand.
Price at Time of Review : Price in our local stores for the 48-ounce containers averaged about $4.50 USD

Can You Eat It
Lets take a look at the ingredients and talk about whether this 99% lactose-free ice cream can work with our low FODMAP diet.
First, the Ingredients:
Breyers Vanilla Lactose Free Ice Cream: Skim Milk, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Cream, Whey, Less Than 2% Of: Vegetable Gums , Mono And Diglycerides, Natural Flavor, Lactase Enzyme, Vitamin A Palmitate, Carrageenan
Breyers Chocolate Lactose Free Ice Cream: Skim Milk, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Cream, Dutch Cocoa , Whey, Less Than 2% Of: Vegetable Gums , Mono And Diglycerides, Salt, Lactase Enzyme, Vitamin A Palmitate, Natural Flavor, Carrageenan
A few items jump out. On the plus side, we know that when milk and/or cream are treated with lactase enzyme that they are rendered almost completely lactose free. The corn syrup is fine it is not high fructose corn syrup, which is different. Gums have been shown to be okay for FODMAPers, and they are in very small amounts here, but we hadnt heard of Tara.
According to Breyers, Tara is a white or beige, nearly odorless powder made from Caesalpinia spinosa seeds. It used as a thickener and stabilizer for foods.
While we are at it, their definition of Natural Flavor is flavors from natural sources that add taste and aroma to food. Natural flavors are derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof.
