Whats The Best Chocolate To Use For Chocolate Covered Strawberries

The best chocolate for covering strawberries is high-quality baking chocolate or chocolate chips. There are only two ingredients for chocolate covered strawberries: chocolate and strawberries . With so few ingredients, its crucial that you use the best you can find.

I almost always use Ghirardelli chocolate chips for this recipe. They melt well, taste fantastic, and are widely available. I dont advise using a chocolate bar, such as Hersheys milk chocolate, as the texture and flavor wont be right. A high-quality semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate is my go-to and its so good when paired with sweet, juicy strawberries!

How To Melt Chocolate For Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

The easiest way to melt chocolate is in the microwave. The safest way is using a double-boiler. Both ways will work just fine, you only need to be cautious when using the microwave that the chocolate doesnt seize up.

To melt the chocolate chips in the microwave, heat them for 30 seconds at a time, stirring well between each session. When the chips are almost completely melted, stir them vigorously until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. If you find the chocolate has already completely melted after the final 30-second interval, sprinkle in a tablespoon or so of chocolate chips and stir vigorously until theyre completely melted and the chocolate is smooth again.

Chocolate Dipped Strawberry Toppings

If you want to get creative and add some toppings to your strawberries, be sure to add them before the chocolate sets. Here are a few fun ideas of things to add:

  • Course sugar for a sparkly finish!
  • Chocolate curls
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Oreo or other cookie crumbs
  • Toasted coconut
  • Graham cracker crumbs
  • Crushed candy bars

You can also decorate the strawberries with a chocolate drizzle, like you see in these photos. Just be sure to add that after the base layer of chocolate has set. For these strawberries, I added some of the melted chocolate mixture to a small ziplock baggie and then snipped off a very small piece from the corner of the bag. Then I drizzled chocolate over the chocolate base coat on the strawberries.

You can also change up the chocolate drizzle, using melted dark, milk, or white chocolate!

Its January as Im taking photos of these chocolate covered strawberries. Will they be prettier in July? Of course, fresh and local strawberries in the height of season are the best!

But hey, Im not gonna complain if someone offers me one of these chocolate covered strawberries!

Tips First, your strawberries must be completely dry and at room temperature before dipping. Otherwise, the chocolate will not adhere correctly.

I like to rinse them in a strainer and allow them to sit for 10-15 minutes. Then, I lay them on a clean dish towel to air dry.

For best results, allow the strawberries to air dry for at least an hour before dipping in the melted chocolate or dry with paper towels.

In gift baskets, on a cheeseboard or on top of a very special cake, chocolate covered strawberries add a touch of elegance to any occasion. Rich chocolate is the perfect balance to bright, tart strawberries. The two flavors really do bring out the best in each other. Yet this DIY looks much harder than it is. Whats The Best Chocolate To Use

For the best chocolate covered strawberries, I like to use a combination of chocolate bark and chocolate chips.

The chocolate bark gives stability to the chocolate coating, so it hardens well and doesnt melt easily. Its also an easy trick that helps keep chocolate bloom away. Note that chocolate bark is also called almond bark or chocolate candy coating. You can usually find it in the baking aisle near the chocolate chips.

For the chocolate chips, be sure to use a quality brand, as this will give the best texture and flavor. My favorite chocolate chips are Guittard semisweet chocolate chips. We have them in our pantry at all times!

As far as flavor, you can use this recipe to make any kind of chocolate-covered strawberries you desire, whether you prefer dark, milk, or white chocolate. Just note that if you use white chocolate chips, youll want to use white almond bark as well.

How To Decorate Chocolate

An easy way to decorate chocolate-dipped strawberries is by drizzling them with contrasting white chocolate. To do this, let the dark chocolate cool and harden around the strawberries while you melt the white chocolate. You could do this by setting the baking sheet in the refrigerator for a few minutes.

Melt the white chocolate using the stovetop or microwave method, and let it cool slightly before spooning it into a pastry bag fitted with a small writing tip. You can also use a resealable plastic bag just snip a tiny bit off one corner after filling the bag. Squeeze a fine thread of melted chocolate over the strawberries.

Let the white chocolate cool and firm up before serving the decorated strawberries.

Best Chocolate For Dipping Strawberries

Chocolate Covered Strawberries With Chocolate Chips

When making chocolate strawberries, the first thing to decide is what kind of chocolate you want to use.

There are a variety of different chocolate options for dipping strawberries. Most work just fine but some have a different result. We typically use one of the following:

  • Ghirardelli Melting Wafers
  • Bakers Chocolate
  • Chocolate Chips

Our current favorite chocolate to use are the Ghirardelli Melting Wafers. The chocolate is delicious, and melts very easily.

Candy coating is a great option because its the least expensive and comes with a lot so you can get a lot of strawberries out of one box. Its also easy to melt and sets up perfectly. The result is a more candy type chocolate coating with a little bit more stiffness.

We will use Bakers chocolate when we are making fewer strawberries or when we really want to impress guests. Its a tid more expensive but has a softer coating and tastes more gourmet.

Guittard Chocolate Chips arent too expensive, and the chocolate is incredible!! Whether you like dark, milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate, these chips are a great option. We have seen that chocolate chips burn more easily so you need to be extra careful when melting.

These chocolate covered strawberries can be mostly allergy-friendly if you use chocolate chips safe for your particular needs. I use Nestle Toll House Simply Delicious chocolate chips, which are free of the top 8 allergens.

And if you cant eat strawberries, you could dip banana chunks instead.
