Directions For Hersheys Chocolate Syrup Recipe:

    • Use a big saucepan at least 2 quarts. This will expand when boiling, and overflows will make a big mess on your stovetop!
    • Combine the cocoa powder, water, sugar and salt in a saucepan over medium heat. Mix with a whisk until smooth.
    • Stir constantly with a whisk or a wooden spoon until it boils.
    • Allow it to boil for 1-2 minutes.
    • Remove from heat.
    • Syrup will be very thin/watery. Allow to cool completely and it will thicken to about the same consistency as Hersheys syrup.

Store the homemade Hersheys chocolate syrup in a mason jar or any other container. It will keep for several weeks in the fridge.

If you want to be really sneaky, pour the cooled syrup into an empty or almost-empty Hersheys syrup container and see if anyone notices the difference!

Pouring the homemade syrup into an empty Hersheys syrup container also makes it much easier to pour out.

Note: I only used about 1/2 1 teaspoon of the homemade chocolate syrup in a cup of milk to make chocolate milk for Haiden and Piper when they were toddlers. .

Now that theyre older, I add closer to a tablespoon per cup of milk to make chocolate milk. As with the brand-name chocolate syrup, you can experiment with the proportions to get the taste youre looking for.

    Dutch Hot Chocolate History

Drinking hot chocolate dates from the Mayans and Aztecs whose cacao bean beverage was bitter, unsweetened, and included spicy chili peppers. Imported to Spain by the Conquistadores, it was a luxury beverage among the nobility. By the 17th century, it began to be sweetened. However, it was still made by grinding whole cacao beans, which include the fat in the central nibs. Even though it was served at chocolate houses as well as in private mansions, it was still expensive and exclusive to those who could afford it.

Dutch process cocoa, or cocoa powder, was invented in 1828 by Coenradd Johannes van Houton using a press that separated the fat from roasted cacao beans. This allowed the caked cocoa to be powdered. In the process now called Dutching, he treated the powder with alkaline and produced Dutch chocolate with a dark color and mild flavor. Dutch process cocoa mixes well with water or milk. The cocoa butter that was separated during the Dutching process could then be added back in, along with sugar and other ingredients, to make solid chocolate bars, chips, and other shapes.

This invention transformed hot chocolate from a luxury enjoyed only by those with spare income to something everyone could afford to make and enjoy at home. Today, the Dutch are still a major force in the chocolate world, with a 25 percent share of the cocoa powder and cocoa butter export business. So, no matter where in the world you are enjoying your hot chocolate, there is a little Dutch in it.

    Can You Heat Cocoa Powder

Cocoa powder can be heated in a few different ways. The most common way to heat cocoa powder is to whisk it into the milk before heating it up. If you add the cocoa powder to hot milk it can clump up. This hot cocoa is naturally sweetened with honey, maple syrup or coconut sugar, but you can use regular white or brown sugar instead.

Whisking the cocoa powder into the milk helps to dissolve it and prevents it from clumping. It is important to whisk the cacao powder into the milk before heating it up, as it will take a bit of whisking to dissolve. If you dont whisk it properly, the cocoa powder can form lumps when heated.

Cocoa powder can also be heated in the oven. To do this, place the cocoa powder on a baking sheet and bake it at a low temperature for a few minutes. This method is less common, as ovens can vary in their heat levels and might not be able to heat the cocoa powder evenly.

Heating the cocoa powder in this way is also less common, as ovens can vary in their heat levels and might not be able to heat the cocoa powder evenly. Heating the cocoa powder in a pan on the stove is the most common way to do it. Just place the cocoa powder in the pan and heat it up until it is hot.

    Tips For Best Results

Be careful to not boil the milk When youre heating the milk, try not to walk away from the stove. We just want to heat the milk through, not bring it to a rolling boil, which will risk curdling the milk and give you a grainy end result.

Use a quality chocolate Please try to use one of the recommended brands above for the best sipping experience. Not all chocolate is created equal, and some is in fact very junky!

Use whole milk Now is not the time to pull out the fat free milk. Treat yourself to whole milk so you have a creamy consistency. Maybe even add a splash of cream if youd like!
