Ok, now lets talk about how to make the best cold brew coffee. I once thought it wasnt possible to beat what I was purchasing at grocery stores and coffee shops, but Ive learned a lot of lessons along the way and now think that my homemade coffee is even better than store-bought!

Also, the process of making it sounds more intimidating than it actually is, all you need is a little bit of patience and the right materials. Lets walk through it.

Cold-brew coffee has gained traction in recent years. Whether made in the slow drip or pot-style immersion process, the coffee concentrate these machines produce makes superior iced coffee and a smooth and balanced morning cup.

To brew a cold-brew coffee concentrate, combine 1 cup of ground coffee for every 4 cups of cold water. Be patient and take a Goldilocks approach to tinkering with the grind of your beans: too coarse and you wont extract enough flavor too fine and coffee grounds will leak into the cold-brew, making it gritty. This guide will help with the learning curve.

What’s The Correct Ratio For Making Cold Brew Coffee

It really comes down to the person’s preferencefor coffee strength so the answer is subjective. This is the other reason I waited so long to attempt homemade cold brew coffee. Whenever I looked up recipes I ran into a slew of different answers, many of which involved complicated ratios and weights.

I prefer stronger coffee and didn’t want to waste grounds on a weak recipe from some random person on the internet .

So to make my attempt more accurate, I bought a bottle of my beau’s favorite cold brew coffee and a pound of whole coffee beans from the same company. I felt confident in my experiments since I could test the homemade & store-bought versions side by side.

Here’s the ratio that I settled on : 1 part ground coffee beans to 4 parts purified water. For example, 1 cup of ground coffee to 4 cups of water.

I don’t know the exact grind and coffee to water ratio the bottled cold brew coffee company uses BUT when my beau and I tasted our homemade version, it was pretty spot on to the bottled stuff & got his picky seal of approval.

Can I make it even stronger? Definitely. I’m going to test it out with a 1 to 3 ratio soon to see how much kick that has, but for now the 1 to 4 ratio works for us and makes more coffee. You can also make coffee ice cubes using any leftover brewed coffee you have on hand to give it extra oomph. 😀

What about weaker? I wouldn’t recommend it. You can always add more water or liquid to the final product, but you can’t take it out if it’s too weak.

What Is Cold Brew Coffee Anyway

How to Make Cold Brewed Coffee at Home

Lets start from the beginning. Most coffee is brewed with a hot method. Hot water leaches out the toasted grains flavor and aroma. Well, it turns out cold water can do the same thing, but it takes a bit more time. Essentially, cold brew coffee is just water and ground coffee, stirred now and then and left to macerate for hours. The result is impressive. You get a relatively strong coffee with an intense color and nice fruit and mild coffee scents. You never get that astringency and roasted flavors you get from other types of coffee.

Combine With Cold Water

Once the beans are ground, its time to combine them with water . There are several ways to go about this, depending on what you have available to you at home.

The most important part is finding a vessel that is large enough to hold the beans and water at the ratio you choose .

  • I like using a quart-sized wide-mouth mason jar to brew my cold brew. It does hold a little less water than Id like for the perfect ratio, but its super convenient.
  • You can also use a large quart glass measuring cup, bowl, or pitcher.
  • Another option you might have is to use a French Press. Then, when its time to strain, you simply have to press down on the filter.

Pour the water over the grinds in whichever vessel you choose, ensuring the grounds are all wet . You can also use a spoon to gently press the grounds down once youve added the water to ensure they are thoroughly wet .

Coffee grinder: this does not have to be expensive at all, my coffee grinder is less than £30 , I have owned it for over 3 years now and it keeps serving its purpose. Alternatively, grind your coffee at the shop but make sure it is done to the right texture.

Cheesecloth: this stops coffee granules from escaping into the drink

Strainer: a small hole sieve works best here.

How To Serve Cold Brewed Coffee

The Easiest Cold Brew Ever: 2 Ways

Cold brewed coffee can be served iced or piping hot, dealer’s choice. You follow the same method for making the coffee either way, and then either serve it over ice or warm it up in the microwave for a hot cup. When warming it for hot coffee, I often add a splash of water to dilute the coffee before warming. But this, again, is a matter of personal taste.

Too strong for your taste? Iced coffee does make a particularly strong cuppa joe! If you’re serving it iced, the ice is meant to melt and dilute the coffee a little. If it’s still a bit too much for you, just dilute your glass with some water or milk to taste.

Are The Materials Safe

Since youll be drinking from a coffee maker regularly, its normal to wonder about the materials used to make your coffee machine. Even coffee makers that use plastics that contain BPA, a chemical that should be avoided, typically only use them in areas like the base, which has no contact with either the coffee or the water, meaning that no toxins are transferred in brewing.

How To Tell If Your Coffee Is A Coarse Grind

I think of it like the same as coarse ground pepper.

How to tell visually:

If your grind size is too fine, you risk clogging up the filter in a cold brew coffee maker. It means that the coffee will get stuck, because there isn’t enough room between the coffee grounds for the water to run through.

  • Make vanilla sweet cream. Mix together 2 cups heavy whipping cream and 3/4 cups vanilla syrup. Store in the fridge to keep it very cold.
  • Make pumpkin sauce. In a pot, combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup water, 2/3 cups pumpkin purée, 1 can of sweetened condensed milk, 1 tsp pumpkin spice, and 1/4 tsp salt. Steep And Brew Your Coffee

Place your mason jar or cold brew coffee maker in the fridge with a lid on. Leave to steep for 12-18 hours. You can also steep your coffee at room temperature if it is more convenient.

If your coffee tastes acidic it is under-extracted and you will need to increase the brew time. If your coffee tastes bitter it is over-extracted and youll need to decrease the brewing time. You can use the table below to help you troubleshoot.

    Better: The French Press Method

This method is also great to use if you are just starting out and arent trying to make a large batch of cold brew!

    • What Youll Need: All youll need here is a French press! After breaking a few glass ones, I highly recommend getting a stainless steel French press like this one.
    • The Method: Combine 1 cup of coarsely ground coffee with 2 cups of water, cover, and refrigerate. After 12-24 hours, place the top on the French press and plunge it down to strain out the coffee grounds. Pour the coffee into a separate container and discard the grounds.
    • Pros: This method is straightforward, only requires one piece of equipment, and straining is a breeze! Plus, you can use your French press to make delicious hotcoffee as well.
    • Cons: Discarding the coffee grounds can get a little messy especially since you arent supposed to put them down your sink.

The steeped tea and the honey syrup will keep separately for at least a week in the refrigerator. You can double or triple the recipe, depending on how much you’ll be drinking, to make a week’s worth. Add the milk just before serving.

Here’s All You Need To Make A Simple Batch Of Cold Brew Coffee:

    • ground coffee beans
    • a filter for removing the grounds

That’s it! So stinking simple, right?

You have a lot of flexibility when it comes to containers & filtering methods. The best “tools” are whatever you have on hand right now in your kitchen. Macgyver it.

My preference is a large pitcher for infusing the coffee grounds & a glass swing-top bottle for storing the finished cold brew.

For filtering, I just use an inexpensive nut milk bag + a cheap plastic funnel! This makes sense because I’m filtering the infusion directly into a tall, narrow jar so a funnel helps with this. However, you could also use a fine-mesh strainer lined with a paper coffee filter placed over a large mixing bowl. Keep it simple.

    Caffeine Content In Cold Brew

Speaking of concentrate, because of the variance in strength of brew, many people report that cold brew can pack a stronger wallop in terms of caffeine content. But it’s not because cold brewing extracts more caffeine hot water actually extracts more. It’s brewing as a concentrate that produces a higher caffeine content per volume of liquid. But diluting it with water as described above will also dilute the caffeine content.

Why I Love To Make My Own

    • The major reason I like cold brew coffee apart from the fact that it is smooth tasting is that I never have to add sugar or any other sweetener to it. Nothing beats the refreshingly sweet taste of a perfectly made cold brew.
    • The world is my oyster as I can make all kinds of iced coffee recipes at home for half the fraction it would cost me if I went to Starbucks or my local café.
    • Make a big batch that would last for up to week
    • It can be enjoyed hot or cold. As mentioned earlier, if it is a cold morning, I put a glass of the cold brew in the microwave to heat up and this doesnt alter the taste too.
    • Coffee stepped in cold water tastes better and less bitter than the one made with hot water.

How To Make Flavored Cold Brew Coffee

    Cold Brew Coffee Recipe

If you want to use flavored coffee with this method, youll want to cut it with regular unflavored coffee, otherwise the flavors will be very strong since the flavors have so much more time to steep out of the grounds and into the liquid than when you hot brew, so start sparingly with flavored coffees and adjust to your taste.

Ive made flavored cold brew coffee with 3/4 cup regular coffee and 1/4 cup flavored coffee grounds . Start out with the smaller amount and test taste to find your favorite flavor profile.

Dark Canyon Coffee in Rapid City, South Dakota, is one of my favorite coffee roasters for flavored coffees, and they are not too far from us. They make great flavored coffees! One of our favorites is the Highlander Grogg, a blend of Butterscotch and French Vanilla.

How To Make The Best Iced Chai Latte

I like to cold-steep my tea for at least a few hours, though sometimes I leave it all day. The beauty of cold-steeping is that the tea stays mellow and smooth even if you forget about it for a while.

I think four bags of tea per quart of water makes a nice spicy cup of iced chai. I recommend starting there, but if you think you’d like your chai lighter or stronger, just adjust the number of tea bags as needed.

I sweeten my chai lattes with a quick honey syrup made of equal parts honey and water. A syrup like this mixes more easily into the tea than straight honey.

    Emma Christensen

You could mix the syrup with the full batch of chai once it’s finished steeping, but I prefer to mix them in the glass. That way I can adjust the sweetness to my taste, or to the taste of any guests who happen to wander by in need of a cool, refreshing beverage.

Top off your glass of iced chai with as much or as little milk as you like. Creaminess is a highly personal decision. I like to use whole milk, but 2% milk, almond milk, or coconut milk are all lovely.

One final thought: If you like to sip your iced tea slowly and don’t want it to get watered down with ice cubes, make an extra batch of chai and freeze it into ice cubes!
