And while McDonalds coffee is very budget-friendly, it still costs more than coffee at home.

So, this copycat recipe is worth keeping in your repertoire.

You only need freshly brewed coffee, ice cubes, and the secret ingredient. Okay, okay its sweetened condensed milk.

Combine the coffee and milk, then let it chill for a while.

I love mocha. Theres something so wonderful about the combination of coffee and chocolate.

This iced mocha recipe is delicious and super easy to make.

Homemade Cold Coffee Recipe

I have since experimented with many versions, even before I knew what iced mocha was, I was making this beverage with hot chocolate and coffee. I am known for my mocha by the way, I make some mean ones.

Moreso, with all that is happening in the world this recent time also meant that I have been able to experiment with various DIY coffee drinks including frozen coffee. I will be sharing the recipes in due course.

When I am feeling generous with my time and not minding washing the extra dishes, I make myself and the family some Frappe. This is a glorified blended Dalgona or cold coffee by the way. Just kidding now. It is equally tasty and I love it.

You would be happy to know this recipe works with decaffeinated coffee too in case you are not keen on caffeine. I love the fact that you can still keep this iced coffee healthy using low fat milk or dairy free alternatives.

If you are not counting calories like me then this cold beverage is perfect with some flavoured coffee creamer or condensed milk.

Making The Iced Vanilla Latte

Vanilla lattes are so easy to make and you dont need to splurge on an expensive vanilla bean to get good flavour with this syrup. Like the rest of the syrups here, the formula is pretty straightforward. Make a plain simple syrup by mixing boiling water and sugar together, then add in your flavouring of choice.

For this vanilla latte, I used plain old artificial vanilla extract but you could use the more expensive pure extract or opt for the vanilla bean if you can find them. But really, the vanilla latte is the easiest of all to make. Like the machiatto, start with an empty cup full of ice. Brew two espresso shots and pour them over the ice, then stir in 1 cup of milk and add vanilla syrup to your taste. Yum!

Can I Brew Coffee Ahead


You can brew the coffee the day before and cool it to room temperature overnight in a sealed container.

Or you can use leftover coffee if you are using a coffee maker like a coffee press or coffee machine with filter, that delivers a large volume of coffee per batch.

The next day, add ice cubes to chill the coffee drink and add the remaining ingredients.

Possible Substitutes And Variations

  • Creamer: Heavy cream or whole milk will work in place of half and half. If using whole milk though I recommend reducing water added to the coffee brew then using 1/2 cup milk per serving so its creamier).
  • An excellent non-dairy substitute for half and half is to use canned coconut cream or canned coconut milk .
  • Sweetener: Raw sugar, white sugar, brown sugar, honey, or maple syrup will work for the sugar option. You could also use sugar substitutes such as stevia, though youll need to adjust amount according to its equivalent (with Stevia you should only need about 1/4 to 1/2 tsp here per serving.
  • Coffee: You can use pre-ground coffee beans if you dont have a coffee grinder or food processor. Purchase coarse ground beans so its not too difficult to strain the finer grind.
  • Flavors: If youd like you can add various flavors to the coffee such as cocoa, cinnamon, pumpkin spice, almond or hazelnut extract, or natural caramel flavor.
  • A vanilla bean is a great substitute for vanilla extract, just stir the seeds in after youve strained the coffee. You could even steep the pod with the coffee concentrate.

Iced Vanilla Caramel Coffee

  • 2 tbsp. toasted coconut

Add the chilled coconut milk and sugar into a bowl and beat with a hand mixer until peaks form. Add 1-2 tbsp of chocolate syrup to the bottom of a glass, add ice cubes then pour the coffee in. Next, add the coconut milk and sugar and stir. Top with whipped cream and toasted coconut sprinkles.

    Use A Liquid Sugar Sweetener

    One of the problems with iced coffee recipes can be the time it takes for stuff like white and brown sugar to dissolve. So if you need to make it quick, the solution is to use liquid sugar sweetener.

    Or if you are into cocktails, sugar syrup. This is made by mixing one part water with one part sugar, boiling the water to dissolve the sugar then leaving it to cool. You can make this up ahead, store it in a bottle in the fridge and use it when you go to make the iced coffee.

    Can You Put Hot Coffee On Ice

    Technically, you can simply pour hot coffee over ice. But I wouldn’t recommend it!

    The ice will water down your coffee, and it won’t get as cool either … and perfect Iced Coffee needs to be quite cold.

    If you’d prefer to make your drink with hot coffee, then I’d recommend using coffee ice cubes instead of regular ones … that way your coffee won’t be diluted and watery tasting. To make coffee ice cubes, simply fill an ice cube tray with leftover coffee, then freeze overnight.

    In the morning, stir a few coffee ice cubes into your freshly-brewed coffee. The cubes will cool off your coffee without watering down the flavor like regular ice would. Once your coffee has cooled, stir in sugar and milk to taste, then top off with regular ice or more coffee ice cubes.
