Pure, unsweetened chocolate is gluten-free. That’s because pure chocolate is made by liquefying roasted cacao beans. Glutena protein found in the grains wheat, barley, and ryeisn’t found in cacao beans and doesn’t play any role in the process of liquefying them.

However, almost every chocolate candy on the market contains multiple ingredients and is made alongside other products, and that’s where gluten can sneak in. You need to be particularly careful of:

  • Chocolate candy with cookie or pretzel ingredients. This type of candy almost always contains gluten since cookies and pretzels generally contain gluten.
  • “Crispy” chocolate candy, which often contains wheat flour and/or barley malt .
  • Chocolate candy made on equipment that’s also used to manufacture gluten-containing products.

Read on for more details on how chocolate is made and which types are gluten-free.

Does Any Chocolate Have Gluten

Pure, unsweetened chocolate is gluten-free. Pure chocolate is made by liquefying roasted cacao beans. Cacao beans dont have any role in making chocolate because they dont have the same kind ofGluten that is found in wheat, barley, and rye. Pure chocolate also contains no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, or artificial sweeteners. It also has no added sugar, which means you can enjoy it as a dessert or as part of a healthy diet.

Can You Eat Chocolate If You Are Gluten Intolerant

Chocolate in any of its milk, dark and white varieties doesnt contain gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and some other grains. It is found naturally in many foods, but it can also be added to foods to make them more palatable.

Gluten-free chocolate is made by removing the gluten from the chocolate and then adding a non-gluten ingredient, such as agave nectar or maple syrup, to sweeten it. Cocoa powder is usually made from cocoa beans that have been roasted and ground into a powder, which is then mixed with water and sugar to form a thick, creamy consistency.

May Contain Sugar Alcohols

Sugar alcohols are used as a sweetener in many products, including candy and baked goods. They can also be found in medicines and dietary supplements. Some sugar alcohols, such as erythitol, are specifically marketed for people with food allergies or sensitivities to other sweeteners.

People with diabetes should be aware that sugar alcohols can cause blood sugar fluctuations. If you have celiac disease, sugar alcohols may not be safe for you to eat because they can cross the intestinal barrier. In general, its best to read the ingredients list on food labels to see if any sugar alcohols are present.

Although most sugar alcohols are safe for people of all ages, pregnant women should avoid foods that contain them. Finally, if you have concerns about consuming sugar alcohols, speak with your healthcare provider before eating anything.

An average cup of coffee contains about 95 mg and the same amount of tea contains about 26 mg. Compared to these two sources chocolate has very little caffeine. The caffeine content of chocolate is dependent on the amount of cacao in the product. A Little About Ghirardelli Chocolate Company

Sugar Free White Chocolate (Gluten Free, Paleo, and Vegan)

Your favorite, healthy chocolate maker, Ghirardelli Chocolate Company, is an American confectioner. But did you know that the Swiss company Lindt & Sprüngli owns this Ghirardelli? Interestingly, the chocolate brand was founded by Domenico Ghirardelli, an Italian chocolatier who was working in South America!

The company was founded in 1852, making it the third-oldest chocolate maker in the US. It is also one of the US chocolate companies to maintain complete control over every aspect of the manufacturing process. It doesnt hesitate to reject 40% of the seeds that it receives in search of the best quality.

The manufacturing process involves roasting the cocoa seeds in-house after removing the outer shell. This reveals the seed inside, called the nib. After roasting the nib, it is ground finely to get particles of 19 micrometers. This helps Ghirardelli to give its products a smooth texture with a wonderfully rich taste.

How Can Gluten Get Into Chocolate

It’s possible even for pure, unsweetened chocolate to contain a bit of gluten if it’s been subjected to gluten cross-contamination in harvesting or processing.

Sadly, the chances of having your chocolate contain gluten just go up from there. The more ingredients used in your chocolate, or that are used in the facility that makes your chocolate, the higher the risk.

Obviously, some chocolate candy products feature gluten ingredients, either in the form of wheat or in the form of barley malt .

For example, Hershey’s Whoppers include both barley malt and wheat flour in their recipe, which places them off-limits for those following the gluten-free diet.

Other chocolate candies contain no gluten ingredients but they are subject to gluten cross-contamination because they’re made on the same manufacturing equipment or in the same facilities as those gluten-containing items.

In my surveys of candy manufacturers, this seems to be the biggest reason many chocolates aren’t considered gluten-free.

When indulging in a piece of white chocolate, choose a brand that uses natural ingredients and no added sugar or artificial flavors. Store-bought bars tend to be more expensive than homemade versions, but they also last longer and often come in larger sizes too.

You dont have to give up your favorite guilty pleasure completely by going gluten free with white chocolate find alternatives like almond milk or coconut milk based bars instead.

Some people also enjoy adding a dollop of peanut butter or honey to their bars for an extra boost of flavor and sweetness. Experimenting with different types of nuts, seeds, fruits, and sweeteners will help you find the perfect balance for your own dietary needs.

Navigating the chocolate aisles trying to find bars suitable when you are diagnosed with coeliac disease can seem like a daunting task, but theres plenty of obvious omissions you can make straightaway.

Anything containing wafer is out, making products like KitKats and Kinder Buenos easy to omit. Likewise, bars such as a Twix or Double Decker that contain biscuit pieces instead are clearly to be avoided too.

Somewhat less obvious to look out for though, are the crispy shells that are found on items such as Smarties. Smarties are made using wheat flour, though thankfully standard M& Ms are not. Whilst that makes for an easy substitution for Smarties fans, it also highlights just how much care you need to take when choosing between seemingly similar items.

Below, youll find a list of some of the main confectionery brands, and what chocolate is gluten free within their ranges. Whilst all care has been taken in compiling this list, its worth keeping in mind that manufacturers can change their recipes at any time without consumers necessarily hearing about it. For that reason, its always best to check an ingredients list just in case of any recent changes to your old favourites.

Where To Buy Cacao Butter

There are a number of brands of cacao available online and at health food stores. I really like this cacao butter for a great combination of price and quality. Cacao butter is naturally gluten free, but check labels to be sure that yours hasnt been exposed to gluten in manufacturing.

Rather than using 100% cacao butter, I prefer to add nonhydrogenated vegetable shortening . Although you can make white chocolate with all cacao butter, the results tend to be too rich-tasting for most people .

Which Flour Is Best For Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies

Which gluten-free flour you use is important.

I tested this recipe using my gluten free flour blend which has equal parts white rice flour, brown rice flour, tapioca starch, and potato starch.

I would recommend using a similar blend. If you use a gluten free flour that has more starch or has too much xanthan gum in it your cookies wont spread the same way.

If you use a blend that already has xanthan gum in it, please omit the xanthan gum in the recipe.

If you double up on the xanthan gum, your cookies will be gummy.

I think this recipe would work well with Ryzes Blue Bag. I havent tested it yet but based on my experience with Ryze I expect it would turn out deliciously.

If you use Ryzes Blue Bag, be sure to omit the xanthan gum.

I expect that Bobs Red Mill 1 to 1 Gluten-Free Flour would also work well in this recipe.

There are lots of great gluten-free flour blends now days. What a magical time to be living, right?

Is White Chocolate Safe For Celiacs

White Chocolate Blondies

White chocolate is a popular item to include on gluten-free diets because it doesnt contain any wheat or gluten. However, some people who are strictly gluten-free avoid white chocolate because of the dairy products that are used in the manufacturing process.

There have been no reported cases of gluten cross-contamination in white chocolate made with dairy ingredients. If youre concerned about avoiding gluten, then you can purchase gluten-free white chocolate bars or chips. Some people also make their own gluten-free white chocolate by using soy milk and cocoa powder as the main ingredients.

You can also buy soy milk and cocoa powder separately to make your own version of white chocolate at home. Be aware that not all brands of white chocolate are safe for celiacs, so read labels carefully before purchasing any products. Some people also eat other products containing traces of wheat, such as pastries and breads, so its important to be vigilant when eating out as well.

Always consult a healthcare professional before starting a gluten-free diet if you have any concerns about consuming white chocolate products. Remember that even if a product says its gluten free, it still may not be safe for people with celiac disease to consume without first consulting a physician.
