Tips For Making Hot Chocolate
How To Sweeten Your Hot Chocolate Made With Cocoa Powder
Around the farm we dont eat much sugar therefore when we do eat something with sugar we usually use less than called for in recipes. Once you arent use to eating lots of sugar a little goes a long way! Another factor which will influence the sweetness of your hot chocolate is if you plan to add marshmallows. We like to put homemade marshmallows in our hot chocolate so we make our hot chocolate with less sugar.
So here are two factors that effect the amount of sugar you add to hot chocolate.
Here are some options for sweetening your hot chocolate:
- Coconut Sugar
- optional homemade marshmallows or whipped cream

Ingredients For Hot Chocolate:
There are just 5 ingredients needed for a classic hot chocolate mix.
- Cocoa powder be sure its unsweetened
- Sugar add granulated sugar to your desired sweetness
- Chocolate melt in semisweet or bittersweet chocolate chips, chunks, or shavings for a rich chocolate flavor
- Milk we use whole milk for a creamier consistency and it incorporates chocolate better than skim milk.
- Vanilla extract use homemade vanilla for the best taste
For an extra rich and creamy hot cocoa: replace 1 cup of whole milk with a cup of half and half or heavy cream.
Stir And Heat Then Done
Keep stirring the hot chocolate mixture while it is being heated. It only takes a few minutes to heat through. You will see steam coming out of the pot. Remember to stir so the contents wont stick to the bottom of the pan.
Microwave Instructions: If you want to use the microwave, in a 2-quart glass bowl, stir the sweetened condensed milk together with the unsweetened cocoa, vanilla extract, salt, and the hot water, then microwave on full power, or high, for 8 to 10 minutes, making sure to stir every 3 minutes. Keep an eye on it.

Since Im not much of a coffee drinker, when I want something hot to drink I usually make tea or hot chocolate. Hot chocolate can be made in many different ways, beginning with either cocoa powder or actual chopped chocolate. Personally, I dont like the cocoa powder route.

When Was Hot Chocolate Invented
Chocolates history dates back to Mesoamerica. There is evidence that chocolate was consumed by the Mayans as early as 500 BC, and possibly even before that. Findings dating as far back as 450 BC, show fermented beverages were made from chocolate. Of course, the chocolate beverages back then were prepared differently than how we prepare them today.
Baking : Cocoa Powder
Before we start lets talk a bit about cocoa powder. Natural Cocoa Vs Dutch Process Cocoa Powder< not the same thing. Cocoa powder, in simplest forms, is basically pure chocolate. Its what remains after the cacao beans have been dried and roasted.
Natural cocoa powder is unsweetened, and as the name suggests natural. The cacao beans get ground down into cocoa solids, and those solids are ground down into a powder. Natural cocoa powder is bit more acidic than Dutch cocoa powder. Dutch cocoa powder has been alkalized and this means its not going to be as acidic.
Thats why I prefer using Dutch cocoa powder vs. natural in my hot cocoa. Its going to make a richer, darker, smoother tasting hot cocoa in the end.

How You Incorporate The Chocolate Matters
Ive tested out many methods for how to actually incorporate the chocolate into the milk.
A lot of recipes say to add the chopped chocolate directly into the hot milk, and stir until it melts. But I dont think the drink ends up smooth enough this way, because its hard to chop it finely enough that it melts in the hot milk. The chopping is something that has to be done by hand , and its an annoying enough task as it is. Proceed to the step by step to see the best method Ive found for ultimate smoothness.

Healthy Hot Chocolate Ingredient Swaps
Although it is a treat, you can make it healthier without sacrificing taste.
Swap the sugar for ¼ cup of honey, maple syrup, or ½ cup coconut sugar.
To make this a dairy-free hot chocolate, swap the regular milk with your favorite nut or soy milk. Ive tried soy and almond milk, and both times it turned out delicious. - Because you know, the higher the percentage of cacao you have in a bar of chocolate, the bitter the chocolate is and adding to it some raw cacao powder, you make it more bitter!
- So for you to enjoy this hot chocolate recipe, I recommend you add some natural sweetener, like stevia, coconut syrup, maple syrup, or even honey. don’t overdo it, please.
- The baobab powder adds some creamy texture and once you add some virgin coconut oil, you will definitely love the flavor that has a velvet kind of texture.

How Do I Store Cocoa Powder
Chances are you wont use your entire container of cocoa powder just for hot chocolate.
The good news is it can also be used in other recipes like brownies, cake and cookies. You might enjoy these classic fudgy walnut brownies or these chocolate peanut butter brownies that both use cocoa powder.
While youre deciding on your next recipe, here are some handy tips for storing your cocoa powder.
- The general rule of thumb is to store cocoa powder in a cool, dry place.
- Store at room temperature, not the freezer or refrigerator.
- Store in an airtight container in the pantry.
- Unopened cocoa powder can last up to 3 years.
- If stored properly, an open container of cocoa powder is typically good for up to 1 year.
- Cocoa powder usually doesnt go bad, but it does lose its flavor over time.
Whats The Difference Between Hot Chocolate And Hot Cocoa
Aww hot chocolate. Err. Wait or is it hot cocoa? Wait. Just gimme a cup of the good stuff!! Ok but in all seriousnessthere is a difference. And its all in the name. If youre asking for a hot chocolate then there should be melted chocolate in the recipe. Hot chocolate usually contains cocoa powder, and melted chocolate. And a hot cocoa only uses cocoa powder.
Because actual chocolate is used in a hot chocolate, then it tends to be a richer. Hot cocoa tends to be a bit thinner, and also a bit sweeter and creamier.
So this is a true hot cocoa recipe, and what I love is I always have cocoa powder on hands, but not always bakers chocolate so I can always whip some up! But hey, do you want me to create a hot chocolate recipe? Leave me a note in the comments!

Easy Hot Chocolate Recipe
I love hot chocolate. Given the opportunity, I will drink very great quantities of the stuff. This afternoon, as I was about to head out on my run of errands, I felt in need of a pick-me-up. I had exactly seven minutes before I had to leave, so I decided to make my quick and easy hot chocolate recipe.
Until I started writing the title of this post, I never thought about whether there was a difference between hot chocolate and hot cocoa. It turns out that, technically speaking, hot chocolate is made with melted chocolate, whereas hot cocoa is made with cocoa.
However, I must admit that Ive called those little cocoa mix packets hot chocolate all my life, and Ive always referred to my own recipe as hot chocolate, so its too late to start calling it something else now. Plus, Ive seen fancy packages of cocoa calling themselves drinking chocolate, so Ive concluded that the whole issue is hopelessly confused and thus unworthy of debate.
So there. I imagine its similar to when you grew up calling it soda, youll never start calling it pop.
Anyhow, heres my own personal recipe for hot chocolate, hot cocoa, or whatever you want to call it. Perhaps Magical Beverage of Warmth and Happiness?
Enjoy this easy hot chocolate recipe!
