Banana Bread is an absolute favorite with the kids and the hubby in my house. My kids devour this banana bread mainly because it has chocolate chips. I have made several versions of banana bread, but this one takes the prize! So moist, perfectly baked, and delicious crunch from the walnuts.
This is a perfect breakfast preparation. When I have bananas that have gotten ripe and brown on the skin, I either freeze them for breakfast smoothies or make banana bread with them. Ripe bananas are the best for making banana bread since they bring natural sweetness and make the bread nice and moist.
Chocolate Chip Walnut Banana Bread
Ripe bananas, sweet chocolate chips, and crunchy walnuts will make this easy quick bread your new go-to banana bread recipe! This tasty banana bread takes less than 10 minutes to prep and only requires one bowl for easy cleanup!
We make a loaf of banana bread at least a few times a month, it’s a super fast recipe that is easy enough for even my elementary-aged son to make. If you have ripe bananas you probably have all the ingredients you’ll need already on hand!
What Size Loaf Pan Do I Use For Banana Bread
Most of our Grandmas used a standard 9 x 5 x 2 ½ inch loaf pan and these can still be purchased. I’ve found that old vintage recipes work best in this standard size loaf pan. However, the current standard size 1 pound loaf pan is actually 8 ½ inch x 4 ½ inch x 2 ½ inch and this is what you will typically find in stores that do not have a specialized baking section.
There are, of course, holiday loaf pans and mini loaf pans as well as specialty larger loaf pans but the sizes noted above are what most recipes are referring to unless otherwise noted.

How To Ripen Bananas Quickly
For those with no patience, like me! I’ve seen a few methods of quickly ripening bananas for baking mentioned before, but for me the absolute simplest method is to place unpeeled bananas in the freezer.
Allow them to freeze then remove and set them out at room temperature on the counter. Once the peels have blackened, the bananas are ready to be used for your next batch of banana bread, banana muffins, banana cake, or other banana based cookies and desserts.
You can also place unpeeled bananas on a baking sheet that is lined with aluminum foil, and put them in the oven at 250-300 degrees F for 15-20 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 30 minutes before using the bananas.
Or place your bananas in a loosely closed brown paper bag and allow the ethylene that the bananas produce to circulate in the bag and ripen them much more quickly than normal.
Check the bagged bananas intermittently to see when your bananas have reached your desired level of ripeness .
The method I haven’t personally tried is to fork your banana peel 3-4 times and microwave banana on high in 30 second increments until ripened . I just can’t bring myself to microwave a banana, but it sure sounds super quick!

Culinary Tips For The Best Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe
Measure the flour properly to prevent dense bread. Fluff, spoon, and level dont scoop and pack!
Whisking the dry ingredients together mimics sifting and evenly distributes the ingredients, so dont substitute another utensil.
Toast the walnuts before adding them to the flour mixture for better flavor.
Add the walnuts and chocolate chips after whisking the dry ingredients to ensure even distribution.
If your bananas arent quite ripe, roast them at 400ºF for 10 minutes with the peel on. Cool slightly, then mash.
Because this recipe has ripe bananas and chocolate chips , we reduced the brown sugar from our base recipe. When measuring brown sugar, pack it in the cup. If you are trying to reduce your sugar consumption or prefer less sweet bread, reduce the sugar to ¼ cup the recipe will still come out great!

If your oven runs hot, check the bread for doneness after 45 minutes. To check for doneness, insert a toothpick into the middle of the loaf. If it comes out clean, its done! If its not done but the top of the loaf is getting too dark, loosely cover with a piece of foil and return to the oven.
The type of loaf pan will impact cook time. Dark metal pans will cook bread faster than ceramic pans.
Banana Bread With Chocolate Chips And Walnuts
- 1/2 cup mixed in, 1/4 cup sprinkled on top

- Mix flour, baking soda, and salt in a mixing bowl.
- Mix canola oil, sugar, and eggs in a separate mixing bowl.
- Combine the dry ingredients in Step 1 with the wet ingredients in Step 2. Mix well.
- Add bananas and stir until the dry ingredients are moist. Depending on how ripe your bananas are, you may need a
- Add 1/2 cup chocolate chips and 1/2 cup walnuts, gently folding them in.
- Preheat the oven to 325 F.
- Pour the mixture into a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan . Sprinkle 1/4 cup chocolate chips and 1/4 cup walnuts on top.
- Bake until the top is browned and a toothpick tester comes out clean in the center, about 75 minutes. Let cool. Run a knife around the inside of the pan to release the banana bread.

How To Make My Banana Bread Recipe
Part 1 : In a large stand mixer, combine the butter and sugar until combined. Add the eggs, milk and the bananas and mix. The batter will look a little curdled, this is normal. Add the flour and the baking soda and mix until the flour is evenly combines. Add the chocolate chips and give it all a quick stir. Spray 2 loaf pans with non-stick spray and evenly divide the batter in the 2 pans.
Part 2 : Transfer the loaf pans to the oven and bake for 45 minutes until a knife can be inserted in the center of the loaf and it comes out clean. Remove the banana bread loafs from the oven and let cool for at least 30 minutes before removing them from the pans and serving. If they need a little more time, continue baking until the knife comes out clean.
Chocolate Chip Walnut Banana Bread Ingredient Superstars
- Spelt Flour: good source of dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals and often for some individuals can be easier to digest
- Ground Flax Seeds: acts as a perfect egg substitute and helps to bind the ingredients together, also provides omega 3s
- Peanut Butter: great source of healthy whole fats
- Walnuts: adds lovely texture to the bread while providing some additional omega 3s
You will notice as you mix this that you will get a much thicker batter than other banana bread recipes. This is totally fine as I find this thickness helps create a better shape to the bread and it has an easier time rising. Combine all these stellar ingredients in one bowl, pour into your baking pan and pop it in the oven. It will take about 50-55 minutes to fully bake, but the wait is so worth it. I did a bit of cleaning and reorganizing in that time frame, but do what feels right to you when waiting patiently. Maybe that time includes sneaking a few extra chocolate chips in. Im not here to judge.
You can serve this bread as is or spread with your favorite toppings. Ive been in love with an extra smear of peanut butter and jam on my slices. Be as creative as you choose to be with this chocolate chip walnut banana bread. Theres technically, no bad way of doing this.

- Bananas: Overripe bananas are the best for banana bread! Youll need 3 bananas for this recipe.
- Flour: I like to use a combination of all-purpose flour and whole wheat flour. But you can use just one or the other if youd like. If using 100% whole wheat flour, your bread may be just a little less fluffy.
- Maple Syrup: Naturally sweetens this banana bread.
- Milk: I used soy milk but any non-dairy milk will work in this recipe.
- Oil: Use any neutral oil that you have on hand. We usually use canola oil, but olive oil, avocado oil, or melted coconut oil should work as well.
- Baking Powder/Baking Soda: The combination of these adds lightness and lift to this bread.

I have not tested this specific recipe, but I have a delicious recipe for gluten free banana bread thats just as moist! Just add chocolate chips.
Can I use plain yogurt instead?
If you dont have Greek yogurt or sour cream, you can also use plain unsweetened yogurt.
Can I use less sugar in this recipe?
Sugar plays a big role in the moist texture of this bread. Adjusting it will likely change the banana bread. For a refined sugar free option, try swapping all of the sugar with coconut sugar.
Why did my banana bread sink in the middle?
This is likely due to two missteps: 1. You over mixed the batter. Over mixing develops the gluten strands in the flour, creating a more dense and heavy batter. Mix just until the ingredients are combined. This is why its important to mix the batter by hand. 2. Your pan is too small. 9×5 loaf pans can vary in size, as mine is about 9.5x5x5 inches. If you have a smaller loaf pan, only fill the pan about 2/3 full. Any more than than and the center of the banana bread will have trouble baking all the way through.
Do I need to make this banana bread with chocolate chips?
If you just want plain banana bread, you can leave out the chocolate chips. Alternatively, you can add nuts instead.

How Do I Keep Chocolate Chips Or Nuts From Settling While Baking Banana Bread
To prevent any larger chunk ingredients that you want to add to your banana bread from settling, coat the desired ingredients in flour. In this case, I have used a small ziploc bag and a small portion of the flour called for in my chocolate chip banana nut bread recipe, and combined my mini chocolate chips and walnuts with the flour.
A light coating of the flour will prevent my chocolate chips and nuts from sinking to the bottom of my baked banana bread loaf.
